Empowering Independence Through Vision Rehabilitation

At In Focus Vision Rehabilitation, we help people experiencing sight loss build practical skills for everyday living. Through supportive in-person or virtual workshops and personalized training, participants learn strategies to increase safety, confidence, and independence at home and in the community.

Our programs focus on real-life skills, from cooking and communication to technology and home organization, helping individuals continue doing the things that matter most.

A photo of the author, Lynn Jensen, is walking towards the camera on a crosswalk with her guide dog, Quest. Quest, a light-colored male yellow Labrador, is to Lynn’s left, and she holds his harness with her left hand. Lynn is wearing an unbuttoned dark blue jean jacket with a burgundy top underneath, a black over-the-knee knit skirt, and black sneakers. A fine chain necklace is visible against her shirt. In the background, behind Lynn, there are street signs to the right and large trees on each side of the sidewalk.

What is Vision Rehabilitation Therapy?

Vision Rehabilitation Therapy helps individuals who are blind, deaf-blind, or have low vision develop practical skills for everyday living. Unlike medical eye care, which focuses on treating eye disease, vision rehabilitation focuses on function, safety, and independence in daily
activities.

Benefits of Vision Rehabilitation Therapy:

  • Greater independence in daily activities.

  • Improved safety at home and while travelling

  • Stronger communication and technology skills

  • Increased confidence and self-esteem

  • Opportunities to connect with others who have vision loss

  • Connection with other experiencing vision loss

  • Practical skills for cooking, organizing, and managing medications

As a Vision Rehabilitation Therapist, I help clients and their families develop skills in five key areas:

1. Personal Care: Grooming, dressing, managing medications, and daily routines.
2. Communication: Reading and writing adaptations (e.g. Braille), using smartphones and assistive devices, managing information, and phone or email strategies, add accessing accessible library services.
3. Indoor Travel: Safe navigation within the home, for example, using basic indoor travel and self-protection techniques.
4. Home Management: Meal preparation, labelling and organizational strategies (e.g. for food and household products),
money identification, and household tasks such as cleaning and laundry.
5. Leisure & Community Access:
Adapting hobbies, crafts, games, and community activities; and participating confidently in community life.
